Review
The self-titled debut by New York's A Day for Honey encompasses many musical genres -- heavy metal, hardcore, alternative, and psychedelia. And they have the strong songwriting it takes to embellish their unusual song ideas. The ethereal beauty of such spacy early-'90s Brit-pop bands as My Bloody Valentine and Lush are merged with the massive riffs of Helmet and Soundgarden, and it works far better than expected. Kicking things of with a brief atmospheric soundscape entitled "Brilliance of the Sun," it leads directly into "Laserblast," which does a great job of introducing the listener to their sound. The group continues to shift between ambient beauty (such as "Cinder" and the closing track, "Dream Within a Dream") and alt-metal experiments ("Godless," "Ashes"). A Day for Honey also explore interesting subject matter in their lyrics, as proven by the song titles "UFO Wreck" and "Fleshsong." What's so impressive about the debut by A Day for Honey is their willingness to take chances; they don't seem to forbid any style from creeping into their own music. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
