With development duties handed off from EA Montreal to fellow Montrealers Visceral Games, EA's co-op shooter series takes a more serious turn with two new protagonists making their way through the frighteningly violent world of the Mexican drug organization La Guadaña (the Scythe) in Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel. Gamers take control of Alpha and Bravo, two mercenaries working for Tactical Worldwide Operations, a private military contractor now run in part by former series stars Elliot Salem and Tyson Rios. As always, players must use a variety of cooperative tactics to complete their objectives, from flanking enemies and creating diversions, to helping each other climb over obstacles or administrating medicine to a fallen comrade. Some objectives can be completed alone, but teaming up with an online friend, playing in local split-screen action, or taking advantage of the streamlined command system with an AI partner helps gamers earn more money and experience, which can be put toward better weapons and accessories. Combat and cooperation also help build up Overkill, a new slow-motion mechanic in which players unleash massively powerful attacks to decimate foes and demolish the highly destructible environments.
